Terror Bombing
By Hayim Granot and Jay Levinson. The Key Publishing, $50.00
In this book, Hayim Granot teams up with Jay Levinson, formerly employed by the CIA and the Israeli police for 20 years as a specialist dealing with counter terrorism and disaster response. The book uses the material in Granot's The True Golden Hour, also reviewed on this website, as the basis for the study of terrorism in general and terror bombing in particular. Coombs estimates that an explosive device, especially a vehicular bomb, is currently the most frequent means of terror used in about half the incidents worldwide.
Levinson structures the characteristics of explosives into informative categories such as The Nature of Explosions, Characteristics of Chemical Explosives, Explosion Effects, Improvised Explosives and many other topics. Useful advice is given. Hands should be dry when handling explosives as moisture increases the absorption through the skin and previously unknown facts are presented. Palestinian terrorists have added HIV virus contaminates shrapnel to explosives in an effort to compound the problems of the injured and complicate search and rescue. The authors also include material on the use of chemical and biological agents in terror weaponry.
The HSO Takeaway: Much of the material here is presented in The True Golden Hour , and while bombings have not been a major threat in this country there is enough valuable information in this book to make it a useful resource in disaster planning. Planners should study both books and review policies that may need updating in light of this material.
